John Roberts is an American lawyer and jurist who currently serves as the Chief Justice of the United States. He was born on January 27, 1955, in Buffalo, New York. Roberts attended Harvard College and then went on to study law at Harvard Law School, where he graduated magna cum laude.
Before becoming Chief Justice, Roberts had an extensive legal career. He worked at several law firms and also served as a law clerk for Judge Henry J. Friendly and then for Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist. Roberts later held various government positions, including Special Assistant to the Attorney General and Associate Counsel to President Ronald Reagan.
In 2003, Roberts was nominated by President George W. Bush to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. He served as a judge on the court until 2005, when President Bush nominated him for the position of Chief Justice of the United States following the death of Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist. He was confirmed by the Senate and assumed the role of Chief Justice on September 29, 2005.
As Chief Justice, Roberts is responsible for presiding over the Supreme Court and leading its discussions and decision-making processes. He has been known for his conservative judicial philosophy and has often been a swing vote on important cases, sometimes siding with the court's liberal justices. Notable cases during Roberts' tenure include the Affordable Care Act cases, same-sex marriage legalization, and debates on voting rights and campaign finance.
John Roberts is married to Jane Sullivan Roberts and they have two children together. He is considered one of the most influential and prominent legal figures in the United States.
